Enhancing Project-Based Learning: Variations on Mentoring
نویسندگان
چکیده
Project-based learning is an essential part of a software engineer's education. The learning achieved through projects can be improved through structured interaction between more experienced students and those students encountering their rst software engineering project. In this paper, we report on our experience over three years with trials of several forms of interaction between undergraduate students at the third-and fourth-year levels. This mentoring involved full year project subjects at both year levels. We discuss the problems encountered during these trials, and describe how the interaction was varied in response. We examine the beneets achieved through this interaction and provide details of student feedback. Such beneets include broadening the experience of the fourth-year students, providing a form of mentoring for less experienced students, and improving both the project process and the quality of the project product.

This research explored how between-group eollaboration enhanced the co-construction of knowledge and performance on project-based learning tasks of collaborative learning groups. The findings of 2 case studies, one that focused on between-group mentoring and one that focused on between-group project review, revealed that both strategies were perceived favorably by the students and had a positiv...
متن کاملLearning to Remain - Evaluating the Use of Mentoring for the retention of FLOSS Developers
The retention of newcomers is of vital relevance for initiatives developing Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS). Based on previous FLOSS research which repeatedly highlights the amount of knowledge developers build in the beginning of their project participation for their continuance and experiences from the organizational domain, we evaluate the use of mentoring as an appropriate knowledge...
متن کاملE-Mentoring: Enhancing Special Education Teacher Induction N
Teaching in 21st-century schools cannot easily be separated from technology-based solutions. Instead, technology is increasingly becoming an essential tool for any teacher’s toolbox, especially the new teacher who is often considered a digital native (i.e., someone who has grown up with digital technologies) (Prensky, 2005). Whether it is online state assessments, Internet-based grade books, wi...

This paper describes novel research that we conducted as part of the Portals project (NSF Grant #CDA-9616990). We examined the roles, functions and strategies that students, teachers, and mentors bring to complex on-line, project-based learning experiences. Data for our study consisted of site observations, interviews, student work samples and videotaped project presentations from twelve projec...

Understanding the goals and constraints of other disciplines are key to working well in cross-disciplinary Problem-, Project-, Product-, Process-, People-Based Learning (PBL) teams. Education environments rarely offer learners opportunities to participate in authentic cross-disciplinary PBL experiences. This paper reports on the role of mentoring in cross-disciplinary learning in Stanford Unive...
